Wilmington Kids: Seahawk Family Arts Matinees

Friday, May 31, 2019

Wilmington kids and families have a lot of options for summer entertainment, from summer camps to bright beach days, but the Office of the Arts hopes that Seahawk FAM’s creative arts offerings will offer a respite from the summer heat or some fun rainy-day entertainment. Seahawk FAM is short for Seahawk Family Arts Matinees, and the performances are exactly what you’d expect from the name.

This summer’s Seahawk FAM performances include the South Bossa Project, Casey’s Laugh and Learn “The Insane Science of Fairyland,” Broccoli Brothers Circus, Make Trouble Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shana Tucker, and Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s Smaller Bites Trio. Each matinee will be on Thursday at 10:30 AM at Kenan Auditorium, with tickets available at $5.

These summer performances were created with all different types of families in mind—with affordable tickets, audience interaction and engagement, and sensory friendly performances.  All families are welcome at sensory friendly performances, but they are specifically designed to create a sensory experience, with accommodations including lower sound levels, a designated safe space, and low-level lights during the performance.

The three sensory friendly performances are Make Trouble Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on July 18, Shana Tucker’s “Chamber Soul” on July 25thand Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s Smaller Bites Trio on August 1st.

Family arts experiences have never been more important, as engaging with the arts helps children discover new skills, broaden cultural awareness, and develop new ways to let their creativity shine. This summer’s Seahawk FAM series will combine the wonders of science, music, performance, theatre, and laughter for a holistic summer arts adventure.

All Wilmington families should have some fun in the sun this summer, but put down the sunscreen on Thursday mornings and head on over to Kenan Auditorium for these exciting arts matinees.  Seahawk FAM performances also welcome summer camps. Preschool through middle school groups have a fantastic time at Seahawk FAM and the box office is happy to recommend exciting performances if group leaders have questions about what would be the best fit for their students.

Tickets to Seahawk FAM performances are $5, with a special group discount available. Tickets are available onlineat the UNCW Arts Ticket Office Monday-Thursday 12-4 p.m, or by phone at (910) 962-3931.
