Wilmington Family Events: Lumina Festival of the Arts

With Father’s Day right around the corner, and only a few weeks past Mother’s Day, there’s no more perfect occasion to spend some quality time with your family. Our Lumina Festival of the Arts events make great presents for dadsmoms, grandparents, uncles, and aunts alike. From film to music to dance, here are some crowd-pleasers that your  family will enjoy: 

Seahawk Family Arts Matinees
June 20 - August 1, Kenan Auditorium

SeahawkFam.pngSeahawk FAM is a series of summer matinees at Kenan Auditorium that are affordable and accessible for families of all kinds. Kids will love laughing and learning with “The Insane Science of Fairyland,” parents will celebrate the healthy and wholesome messaging of the Broccoli Brothers Circus, and the sensory friendly performances (July 18, July 25, August 1) are designed to be inclusive for those with challenges involving sensory sensitivities.  

Hooked on Arts Street Fair
July 13-14, 10 am-2 pm, Kenan Auditorium Lawn 

Hooked-on-ArtsParents will appreciate this two-day arts fair with family-friendly performances by Mr. Mark and Mr. Scooter! There will be a Chalking Competition on Saturday, as well as arts vendors and food trucks all weekend. The Street Fair will be in celebration of the healing power of creativity, and this is a great opportunity for families to create memories together while also helping the community.  

Latin Dance Salsa Party
July 13, 9 pm, UNCW Amphitheater 

latin dance.jpgHas your mom or dad always wanted to take dancing lessons, but never taken the plunge? Mark your calendars for Lumina Festival’s Latin Dance Salsa Party with Wilmington Latin Dance! This free salsa party will feature a beginner dance lesson, followed by an inclusive and lively dance party. Pull out all the stops with tickets to American Dance Festival’s Footprints performance before the party. 

UNCW Summer Jazz Workshop Faculty Big Band with Michael Mossman
July 17, 7:30 pm, Kenan Auditorium 

Michael-MossmanIs your family full of music lovers? The vibrant UNCW Faculty Big Band will join special guest Michael Mossman in a performance that will include swing through bebop and modern style. Michael Mossman is a versatile musician, band leader, composer, and educator who has been active in the jazz and Latin jazz scenes having worked with Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Eddie Palmieri. 

Cucalorus Film Screening: Phoenix, Oregon
July 27, 7:30 pm, Kenan Auditorium 

Phoenix-OregonWho doesn’t love bowling? Better yet, who doesn’t love pizza? Starring James Le Gros, Lisa Edelstein, Jesse Borrego, Diedrich Bader, Kevin Corrigan, and directed by Gary Lundgren, Phoenix, Oregon takes a comedic look at the existential crisis many face when trying to find meaning and relevancy at mid-life. This film screening is presented by Cucalorus. 

Cucalorus Presents: Campfireball featuring Dance-a-lorus Lab
July 28, 6:30 pm, Kenan Auditorium 

CampfireballCampfireball blends intimacy and absurdity in a live, improvisational variety show and story-based social media. Perfect for any outgoing family member, this live stage event encourages collaboration as a fundamental form of creative expression and is an experiment in collective experience and storytelling.
