BikeGuidelines for School Counselors on Counseling First-Year International Students

Counselors in the United States

Requirements for international students in U.S. schools:

  • Must submit SAT or ACT score if in a U.S. high school for two or more years.
  • Can submit a TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson Test of English, or Duolingo English Test score in place of SAT or ACT if in U.S. high school for less than two years that meets our English Proficiency Requirements.
  • Must meet Minimum Course Requirements for NC if in U.S. high school for two or more years.
  • GPA middle fifty percent is 3.8-4.4 weighted.
  • One letter of recommendation from a core teacher or school counselor - optional.
  • Must meet domestic first-year deadlines or November 1 for Early-Action or February 1 for Regular Decision.

International Counselors

Requirements for international students living abroad:

  • Must submit TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson Test of English (PTE), or Duolingo English Test (DET) if English not first language with a 71, higher on the TOEFL or 6.0 or higher on the IELTS, 54 on the PTE or a 54 on the DET. Scores must be sent directly from TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or DET in order to be official.
  • SAT or ACT can replace TOEFL, IELTS, DET, or PTE is student has 450 or higher on critical reading of SAT or 20 or higher on reading section of ACT.
  • Transcripts must be in English and sent directly from the school or an approved NACES evaluation company in order to be official.
  • One letter of recommendation from teacher or school counselor - optional.
  • Must have a 2.5 minimum GPA on a U.S. 4.0 scale; we will convert GPA.
  • Deadline to apply for fall semester is April 1 and the deadline to apply for spring semester (international students living abroad only) is October 15.
