Applied Behavior Analysis Minor Program Overview

Equipping Educators

In partnership with the Psychology Department in UNCW’s College of Science and Engineering, we offer the Applied Behavior Analysis and Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities Minor to better prepare educators to serve individuals with special needs.

The minor provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of behavior analysis with an emphasis on how these principles are applied. For example, students will learn how principals of behavior analysis are applied in schools to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, down syndrome, etc.

Training and Experience

The curriculum, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field, will include coursework from the Department of Psychology and the Special Education program. Students will complete four required core courses (12 hours), one required field experience course (3 hours), a required advanced topic course (3-4 hours), and 3 hours of approved electives for a total of 21-22 hours. At least 9 hours must come from courses outside the student’s major.

How Do I Apply?

UNCW students in any field of study are eligible for the Applied Behavior Analysis & Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities Minor. To declare the minor:

  1. Consult with your advisor.
  2. Log onto MySeaport and click on the Academics tab at the top of the screen.
  3. Select the "Major Declaration/Curricular Updates" link, located under the Student Services menu on the left side of the screen.
  4. Read and follow instructions to declare a minor.
  5. Click "Add minor/ cluster" link. Make selections from the drop-down menu.
  6. Click "Submit Changes" button.
