Information Technology & Computer Science & Information Systems, Bachelor’s/Master’s Combined Program Overview

Earn Two Degrees and Save Time and Money

The combined bachelor’s/master’s degree program is designed to provide qualified students the means to complete the requirements for both degrees in a period of five years. Upon completion, a student will earn a B.S. in Information Technology and an M.S. in Computer Science and Information Systems. 

A key feature of the program is that a student can count up to 12 hours of graduate-level courses to fulfill requirements for the B.S. and use those same 12 credits toward the M.S. in Computer Science and Information Systems.

The program is designed for students in the B.S. program in Information Technology who have:

  • Completed a minimum of sixty-seven (67) credit hours in their undergraduate programs. (Note: more hours may be permitted if the student is a double major.) Transfer students must have completed a minimum of two semesters as full-time students at UNCW, a minimum of 24 hours.
  • Completed BUS 500 and CSC 500
  • A minimum accumulated grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 on all 100-400 level courses that are core or required within Information Technology at UNCW.

How Do I Apply?

During the second semester of your junior year, meet with the Graduate Coordinator to fill out and submit the CSC 4+1 Application Information Form requesting permission from the department chair to apply up to 12 hours of graduate-level credit earned during your senior year towards your future master’s work in Computer Science and Information Systems.

The program coordinator, in consultation with the M.S. CSIS graduate committee, may grant permission to apply up to 12 hours of graduate-level credit earned during the senior year towards the future master’s degree in Computer Science and Information Systems.

If permission is granted, meet with the Graduate Coordinator for advising and degree planning.

 

Steps for Admission to Combined Programs

  1. Undergraduate Application: If you are not a current UNCW student, submit the appropriate application to the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
  2. Communicate: Communicate your interest to participate in the combined program with your undergraduate advisor and the coordinator of the graduate program. This includes reviewing the process to be considered for the combined program and discussing when to apply to the Graduate School.
  3. Combined Program Approval: The graduate coordinator will review your request to participate in the combined program. Approval to apply for the combined program does not guarantee admission to the Graduate School.
  4. Junior Year: During your junior year, you will work with your undergraduate advisor and the coordinator of the graduate program to identify which graduate courses you may take as an undergraduate student.
  5. Senior Year: During your senior year, you will work with the graduate program coordinator to obtain approval to take graduate courses as an undergraduate student.
  6. Graduate School Application: UNCW's Graduate School requires that your bachelor's degree be awarded prior to the first day of graduate classes for the term that you begin the master's degree program. Apply to take graduate classes for the term you begin the master's program.
