Prepare for a future as a:

Develop skills to thrive as a working artist.

Create visual text and imagery concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire and inform consumers.

Use computer programs and illustrations to create graphics and animation.

Prepare to teach art in grades K-12.

Produce films, video games or graphics for commercials and other forms of TV.

Create the rules, characters, settings, stories, and for new games, and write the code.

The major is excellent preparation for a career working in a gallery or a museum.

Studio Art, B.A. Program Overview

A Multidisciplinary View of Current Art Practice

The Studio Art major offers a multidisciplinary view of current art practice. The department emphasizes exposure to a range of media in small classes with individual attention. Through technical skill and creative thinking, students are encouraged to develop a personal, disciplined direction with an understanding of their place in art history and contemporary art.

The Studio Experience

The curriculum provides studio experience in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, printmaking and graphic design. Exhibiting artists in the CAB Gallery and visiting artists are a regular presence and enhance student learning through lectures, collaborative projects and studio visits.

No Boundaries

Opportunities to study abroad, ranging from short-term spring break programs to longer summer programs, await you.

Students are encouraged to explore international archaeological sites, major monuments and world-renowned museum collections in places such as Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Japan, Macedonia, Belize, Guatemala and South Africa, in person.

CAB Gallery

The department oversees two exhibition spaces: the Cultural Arts Building Art Gallery and the Mezzanine Gallery. The CAB Gallery hosts regional, national and international juried and invitational exhibitions and graduating senior shows.

No special requirements for admission. Students must earn a "C" or higher in all ARH courses to count toward the major.
