Dance Minor Program Overview

The dance minor provides you with a foundation of technical practice, choreographic experience and performance training in preparation for a career in the dance field.

Dance classes provide a nurturing and stimulating environment designed to develop and challenge your technical and artistic abilities as you strive to reach your potential as a creative and independent artist.

Learn from the Pros

The goal of the minor is to give you an artistic, cultural and social view of dance while exploring teaching, independent projects or performance opportunities within the vibrant Wilmington dance community. 

Guest artists have come from such nationally renowned companies as the

  • Martha Graham Dance Company,
  • Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble,
  • Ballet Hispanico,
  • Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company,
  • the Chase Brock Experience

through Kenan Auditorium Presents and the Wilson Center.

Dance Cooperative

You will also have the opportunity to study and perform with The Dance Cooperative, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing affordable, professional classes to both the UNCW and Wilmington community.

The Dance Cooperative hosts many performance opportunities for students including annual concerts, the Wilmington leg of The North Carolina Dance Festival, and "Dance-a-lorus," a collaborative event with Cucalorus International Film Festival.

Declaring a Dance Minor

The dance minor can only be added after a major has been declared (usually sophomore year) and is open to all majors and levels of experience.

    Musical Theatre Minor

    The interdisciplinary minor in musical theatre (housed in the Department of Music) is offered to students in all majors. They take core coursework in applied voice, dance and movement, scene study and production workshops, and musical theatre history and literature.

  • Art Education, M.A.T.

    This full one-year (or 17 months, depending on the track) program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in art or a related field and would like to teach art at public schools.
