Tourism, Recreation and Sport Minor Program Overview

A minor in Tourism, Recreation, and Sport is useful for students majoring in any human service field, education, or business, or who have interest in learning about the role of recreation, leisure, and sports in society. Students will gain a strong foundational knowledge of the industry.

Learn To

Create a professional marketing plan for local recreation, sport and/or tourism business or organization.

Differentiate among the principles and practices of safety, emergency, and risk management in recreation, sport and tourism industries.

Analyze principles and procedures related to the operation and care of leisure service resources, areas and facilities.

Describe historical, scientific, and philosophical history of the leisure service profession.

Deliver effective oral presentations.

Plan and implement recreation programs.

Prepare an operating budget.

Find your career in:

management of multitude of activities such as studying tour destination, planning the tour, making travel arrangements and providing accommodation.

Responsible for managing employees and for planning, marketing, coordinating and administering hotel services such as catering and accommodation facilities. (Source)

Responsible for the management and supervision of all recreation centers and ensures safety, proper use, and proper conduct of the patrons.

Oversees the design, set-up, and execution of events that bring people together. (Source)

Provides services to passengers on cruise ships. Besides assisting in the operation of the ship, they may serve food and drinks, maintain cabins and public areas, lead shipboard activities, and provide entertainment. (Source)

Accompanies groups of visitors to tourist attractions, whether on day trips or longer visits, and give them information and insights that help them make the most of the experience. (Source)

*In selecting courses to fulfill the 9 elective credits, students are strongly encouraged to consult with the faculty in Tourism, Recreation, and Sport.

Students must complete 21 hours, comprised of five core classes and two elective credits, as approved by the faculty.
