Two Concentrations

  • Students can declare Pre-Exercise Science after completion of 24 credit hours and a 2.0 or higher UNCW GPA.
  • Admission into the Exercise Science major, with the Exercise Physiology Certification concentration, requires a 2.7 UNCW GPA or higher, and a C or higher in MAT (see catalog for specific MAT requirement), BIO/L 201, CHM/L 101, and EXS 210. 
  • Admission into the Exercise Science major, with the Allied Health concentration, requires a 3.0 UNCW GPA or higher, and a C or higher in MAT (see catalog for specific MAT requirement), BIO/L 201, CHM/L 101, and EXS 210. 
  • Once students have met these requirements, they can declare Exercise Science in My Seaport. An application is not required.
  • All students must complete all core and concentration courses with a grade of C or above.

The combined Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and Master of Science degree in Applied Gerontology program offers an accelerated path toward a Master of Science degree that prepares graduates to work in healthcare and community-based settings serving older adults. Graduates from this program are also trained to be leaders in the intersections of exercise science, gerontology, and wellness.

The EXS BS degree is designed for those students who are interested in pursuing graduate work in Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and other allied health areas. The Exercise Science curriculum focuses on applying theoretical and practical aspects of exercise, fitness and wellness within clinical, educational, private and community settings. Exercise Physiologist Certification Concentration: This concentration fits student looking to get involved with Physical Training and will prepare them for the ACSM exam.

As indicated in the above questions, the EXS degree is a stepping-stone degree to graduate school. Once a student earns a graduate degree, they are relatively marketable.
