The UNCW Athletic Training program is a limited-access program designed to prepare students for a successful career as a qualified healthcare professional, educated and experienced in the management of healthcare problems associated with the physically active.

Successful completion of the degree qualifies students to sit for the Athletic Training Board of Certification examination, as well as all relevant state practice requirements.

Requirements

Students must meet University admission requirements, as well as requirements for admission to the degree, listed below.

Meet the technical standards for admission or show potential for accomplished tasks
Undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
Minimum of 3.0 GPA from undergraduate coursework
Personal statement in 1000 words or less describing primary career goals, most direct influence on choice to become an Athletic Trainer, your attributes related to the field of Athletic Training, and why you should be selected to the Athletic Training major
Two (2) letters of recommendation
Personal interview with the UNCW Athletic Training faculty and staff
Must complete both an ATCAS and a UNC Wilmington graduate school application

The MSAT program at UNCW prepares students by fostering critical thinking and promoting holistic, evidence-based patient care through an innovative curriculum that empowers future healthcare professionals. Faculty, preceptors, and community partners seamlessly guide learners in their transition to clinical practice, equipping them with knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.

Memberships

UNC Wilmington’s athletic training program is a member of the World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy (WFATT) and the Association for Athletic Training Education (AATE). WFATT provides international leadership and collaboration in the healthcare profession of Athletic Training / Athletic Therapy to optimize the health of active populations. AATE's mission is to provide a community that serves as a responsive and progressive voice to advance the athletic training profession through education.

Accreditation

The Athletic Training Program in the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). CAATE is the agency responsible for accreditation of professional Athletic Training programs. CAATE is sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), The American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). After the last comprehensive review, the UNCW Athletic Training Program was granted the maximum 10-year accreditation. The next comprehensive review is scheduled for 2028.
