D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy is not your ordinary K-8 school!

It’s a community of partners who help serve the whole child. Our experienced and well-qualified teaching staff is committed to student success, and we have a support system like no other in town.

For nearly 60 years, D.C. Virgo has educated Wilmington students, served area families and strengthened this community we call home. Today, our school represents two powerful forces – innovation in education and community partnership – joining together to better serve a new generation of students.

Together with our partners at UNCW’s Watson College of Education and New Hanover County Schools, we’ve created a year-round school uniquely designed to serve students, their families and our broader community.

We offer action-based engagement, where movement and learning go together, along with many athletic and academic enrichment opportunities.

Opportunities abound at DC Virgo

D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy students learn more about water conservation and the animal communities that thrive in the world's oceans at UNCW’s Center for Marine Science.

At D.C. Virgo’s community garden, students get hands-on experience with a variety of plants.

Students check out a bin full of trash plastic as part of the JUST US project which focuses on environmental justice, reducing the use of plastics and using non-recyclable plastics to make art. The curricular component is titled The Trouble with Turtles.

Duke Energy provided kits that included 11 activities and materials for 200 participants at D.C. Virgo’s Science Night.

UNCW's Office of the Arts coordinated a grant-funded project – the Hip Hop Collective - to create a trauma-informed, resiliency-focused, hip-hop curriculum for seventh and eighth graders at D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy.

D.C. Virgo students gather to hear UNCW faculty, students, staff and community read passages from books by African American or Black authors at the academy’s annual African American Read-In.
