The e-Mentoring for Student Success (eMSS) program is now recruiting first through third year middle and high school math teachers to participate in an innovative online mentoring project.
Math Counts - MATH COUNTS is a nationwide coaching and competition program for middle school students. Students participate as "mathletes" in groups at school, then possibly in state and national competitions. Students can try the problem of the week or math challenge. Teachers will find coaching tips, a support forum, a quarterly newsletter, and can request the free school kit.
Math Projects for Science Fairs - To date there have not been a lot of mathematics projects in the science fairs and the authors believe that one reason for this might be that it is not at all clear what a mathematics project might involve. To help shed some light on this problem the authors have prepared a list of possible projects and many references on topics that could make exciting and interesting projects.
MathNerds - This website provides free, discovery-based, mathematical guidance via an international, volunteer network of mathematicians. "MathNerds does not supply answers to homework, take home tests and the like; rather, we provide hints, suggestions, and references to help our clients understand and solve their mathematical problems."
MEGA-Mathematics - The MegaMath project is intended to bring unusual and important mathematical ideas to elementary school classrooms so that young people and their teachers can think about them together.
National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - This is a growing library of interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets. The emphasis is on K-8 for mathematics instruction. The topics include number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability. The virtual manipulatives are related to the NCTM standards for each age group. Each activity includes instructions, the related NCTM standard, and a detailed lesson plan.
