The Watson College provides many programs to support new and experienced teachers. Even after you graduate, we're here to help you achieve career success and make a meaningful impact on your students.

BEGINNING TEACHERS

Teacher demonstrates craft First Years of Teaching Support Program WCE supports graduates in the first three years of teaching with a program that provides onsite support, online mentoring and web-based resources. The First Years of Teaching Support Program provides the materials, methodology and encouragement new teachers need early in their careers. LEARN MORE
Teacher helping students with worksheet NC New Teacher Support As an anchor institution for the NC New Teacher Support Program, UNCW works with select beginning teachers in charter and traditional public schools in Sampson, Onslow, and New Hanover Counties. The program, which provides individualized coaching and professional development, is designed to improve teacher retention, effectiveness and student learning. LEARN MORE
Teacher helps student with a craft Promise of Leadership Each year, WCE recognizes new teachers, nominated by their school system, who show leadership and innovation in the classroom. The POL Program gives new teachers an opportunity to work with a UNCW Master Teacher, participate in professional development sessions and provide professional development for other beginning teachers. Beginning Teacher Conferences

The Watson College offers three beginning teacher conferences each year. The events which feature presentations and interactive sessions on a variety of topics, are designed to provide motivation and support for teachers in their first three years.

EXPERIENCED TEACHERS

National Board Certification Support Program WCE offers a program to support teachers planning to pursue National Board Certification, the highest certification in the teaching profession. Since 2001, the program has supported more than 1,600 initial, advanced and renewal candidates. LEARN MORE
Master Teachers WCE’s Master Teacher initiative is designed to recognize teachers in partnership schools who have demonstrated excellence in teaching. During a three-year appointment, select teachers receive 30 hours of professional development and work closely with WCE’s academic programs to impact their instruction and student learning. Professional Development WCE’s Professional Development System Office provides conferences, seminars and workshops to give teachers many for ongoing professional growth. PD workshops are also available through CESTEM, MarineQuest and the CMC! LEARN MORE

EDUCATORS OF COLOR NETWORK

In 2022, the Watson College launched an Educators of Color Network to provide opportunities for educators to work together to recruit and retain teachers of color. More than 150 educators from across the state are participating in the EOC Network. Join them!

ON-CAMPUS RESOURCE LIBRARIES

Technology Loan Program CESTEM offers a free technology loan program for K-12 educators. Equipment including a Mobile 3D Printer, VR System, Venier probes and sensors, and more can be borrowed for use in the classroom to engage students’ interest in STEM! VISIT THE TLP
Assistive Technology Lending Library WCE’s Center for Assistive Technology lends AT equipment for persons with disabilities and those who provide education, therapy, intervention and care for them. LEARN MORE
Teaching Resources WCE’s Curriculum Materials Center maintains a collection of more than 20,000 teaching resources and materials including NC textbooks, manipulatives, posters, 3D Models, CD’s, musical instruments and more. Pre-K-12 teachers in Southeastern NC may borrow items from the CMC free of charge. VISIT the CMC
