A commitment to race, equity and inclusion guides our work here at the Watson College. We strive to create positive learning experiences for all students, recruit educators of color to the profession, and make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.

EDUCATORS OF COLOR NETWORK

In 2022, the Watson College launched an Educators of Color Network to provide opportunities for educators to work together to recruit and retain teachers of color. More than 150 educators from across the state are participating in the EOC Network. Join them!

IT BEGINS WITH TEACHERS

In 2016, the Watson College launched an advertising campaign to promote the teaching profession and the College by sharing stories of inspirational teachers. In 2022, we relaunched the campaign with a focus on highlighting the stories of teachers of color.

STEM SENC DEI LEADERS

In 2023, STEM SENC introduced a new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leaders Group. The initiative, sponsored by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, was created to develop and support STEM educators of color. Six teachers from four school districts were selected as STEM SENC’s inaugural DEI Leaders.

 

NC EDUCATOR PIPELINE COLLABORATIVE

The Watson College, Cape Fear Community College and New Hanover County Schools are participating in the NC Educator Pipeline Collaborative. The collaborative was launched by the Public School Forum of NC in partnership with the N.C. Office of the Governor and The Belk Foundation to improve recruitment, retention and diversity in NC’s educator workforce.

 

COLORING THE LANDSCAPE SUMMIT

In spring 2023, the Watson College and the NC Educator Pipeline Collaborative sponsored an inaugural Coloring the Landscape Summit. The event, planned in partnership with CFCC and NHCS, explored issues related to recruiting and retaining of teachers of color. Representatives from 11 school districts, 3 community organizations and 4 statewide organizations, as well as 27 students interested in pursuing a teaching career, participated in the summit.
