Community College Students

An important consideration for many community college students is when to transfer and where. One can transfer directly to an engineering college after completing the minimum number of courses needed for transfer with the required GPA. See the transfer requirements page for more information. A student may opt to stay at a community college and complete an Associate's degree.

An Associate in Engineering could be a bridge to direct admission to the NC State College of Engineering. The Craven Community College Havelock Campus is an NC State College of Engineering partner institution and offers an Engineering 2+2 Transfer Program as well as an NC State Mechanical Engineering Systems degree on-site.

For those in the Wilmington area, and those who would like to remain in the Wilmington area for as long as possible before transferring, it may be advantageous and more expedient to transfer to the NC State Engineering 2+2 Transfer Program at UNCW after completing the UNCW transfer requirements.

Community college academic advisors may tell you that any course you take at a community college in the college-level transfer program will be accepted by four year colleges. This is true BUT these courses may not count toward degree requirements in engineering.

The required community college mathematics course sequence for an engineering degree is MAT 271, 272, 273, and for most engineering majors, MAT 285. Depending on math placement results, one may have to take MAT 171 (algebra) and 172 (trigonometry) before taking MAT 271 (calculus). Required science courses include CHM 151, PHY 251, and PHY 252. Some engineering majors require CHM 152 as well.

For those currently at North Carolina community college, the following information may be helpful in selecting humanity and social science courses that will count towards engineering degree graduation requirements at NC State. If you currently have an A.S. or A.A., degree most of these requirements will be met, so please consult the Program Director for further course recommendations.

From the courses above, the following meet NC State's Global Knowledge co-requisites: ENG 251, 252; HIS 111, 121, 165, 211, 212, 213, 214, 251, 252; REL 110, 211, 212; ANT 220, 240; POL 210, 220; HUM 160.

From the courses above, the following meet NC State's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion co-requisite. Otherwise extra courses must be taken: ENG 231, 232, 273; SOC 213, 220, 230.

Notes: Requirements in all categories above must be satisfied. A total of 21 credits are required. Students should consider the GEP website the authoritative source for approved course requirements and should always consult the Program Director with questions about courses that do not appear in the table.
