Mass spectrometery is a power analytical tool for the characterization and identification of both small molecules and large proteins.
The MS facility hosts several MS spectrometers, including the Bruker micrOTOF-Q II and Bruker amaZon SL which are located in MARBIONC 2018.
These two instruments are interfaced with Agilent 1290 UHPLC allowing users to do LC-MS. All MS spectrometers are available to all researchers and students at UNCW. Access of the instrumentation in the MS Facility is obtained via training by Dr. Ralph Mead or Richard Lancaster (instrumentation lab).
The MS Facilities currently does not service external users (i.e. local companies). The primary users of the NMR lab are from the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, but CheIF welcomes researchers from different colleges. Extensive users should provide solvents and columns.

This instrument has an ion trap designed for the highest ion storage capacities. The Dual Ion Funnel technology provides high sensitivity in the low fg range. There are two ion source options: ESI and APCI. The flexible APCI source also offers users with direct injection for analysis of solid samples.
Bruker amaZon SL allows MSn (up to MS11) fragmentation, which can provide detail structural investigation of compounds. The fast scanning speeds up to 32,000 u/s deliver rapid duty cycles for both MS and MS/MS. The Agilent 1290 Infinity UHPLC permits users for LC-MS.

This instrument has an excellent mass accuracy of 0.5-2.0 ppm and a superb resolving power of 17,500 – 20,000 FWHM with mass range up to 3000 Da (singly-charged). This instrument has the capability for MS/MS analysis.
Electrospray (ESI) and atmospheric chemical ionization (APCI) sources are available for the instrument to ionize relatively non-polar to polar compounds. The Agilent 1290 Infinity UHPLC allows users to perform LC-MS with sub-2 micron particle size columns.
