The Cape Fear Foreign Language Collaborative is an academic alliance of regional language professionals who meet to discuss issues that affect the foreign language teaching profession.
The Collaborative provides professional development opportunities, supports school and community initiatives, offers scholarships to university students and seniors in high school, and serves to distribute information about language learning and cultural events.
The Department of World Languages and Cultures has agreements with dozens of agencies in the region to receive student interns who are juniors or seniors studying French, German, or Spanish. Internships provide students with practical experience involving observation and application of a foreign language.
Latino Book Club offers the community with the opportunity to learn about the Latino culture of the United States through book discussions, book readings, and book-to-screen events. It also supports and funds bilingual and heritage literacy among children of the Wilmington area through its alliances with community organizations, schools, and independent bookstores.
North Carolina Teaching Asia Network (NCTAN) offers seminars for K-12 teachers on East Asian history, geography, literatures, arts, philosophy, cultures, and more. Upon completion of the required seminars, participants will be eligible to apply for a study abroad tour to East Asia.
Somos NC: Voices from North Carolina’s Latino Community contains oral histories collected by students in Dr. Amanda Boomershine's SPN 490: Service learning and research class (Fall 2015, 2016, 2017). The students interviewed first and second generation Latino North Carolinians on a variety of topics including language, culture, immigration, and education. Most interviews were conducted in Spanish.
In addition to volunteering at internship sites, UNCW students are also needed at other sites in the region. See where you can volunteer and if you aren't already, join our Spanish student listserv so that you can receive emails with information on volunteer opportunities.
