What are Violent or Abusive Relationships?
Domestic Violence and Shelter Services, Inc. of Wilmington
The systematic pattern of behaviors in a relationship that are used to gain and/or maintain control and power over another. Types of abuse include: emotional, psychological, sexual and physical.
What resources are available for students concerned about abuse & violence in relationships?
The CARE office offers crisis response, consultation, and advocacy services in combination with community education to provide a supportive environment within the campus community. Our hopes are that we will prevent relationship violence from occurring or escalating, and we strive to be a useful resource for students dealing with violent occurrences. We focus our efforts on UNCW students, staff and faculty but also collaborate with rape crisis, domestic violence, and law enforcement services in the surrounding community.
The University Police Department will work closely with students who are concerned about relationship abuse and violence issues. Investigators can assist students with protective orders, legal issues, and personal safety plans.
We strongly encourage students to make contact with the available offices early and often when issues or concerns arise.
UNCW works closely with Domestic Violence Shelter & Services, Inc. (http://www.domesticviolence-wilm.org/ ) of Wilmington. DVSS is a community agency that provides advocacy, counseling, shelter, and legal guidance to victims of abusive and violent relationships.
What about Protective Orders?
University Police Department will aid students in exploring, attaining and enforcing protective orders against stalkers or violent partners. UPD works together with the student, court advocates, police, and the district attorney’s office on these cases. Speaking with University Police does not oblige any individual to take legal action; we recommend that students speak to University Police about incidents that concern them, even if the incident seems minor to the individual.
If any student already holds or receives a protective order on their own, they should bring a copy to the University Police Department so they can aid in its enforcement.
