On April 20, 2010, a drilling rig maintained by BP in the Gulf of Mexico exploded, killing 11 people and resulting in the largest offshore spill in U.S. history. The University of North Carolina Wilmington maintains the state-of-the-art scientific resources needed to track the flow of the Deepwater Horizon oil and gas spill and to monitor, measure, and mitigate its impact in the Gulf and along the Atlantic Coast.
