22 Freshmen Join ELC Class of 2017-18!

Saturday, September 02, 2017

This fall, the Watson College welcomed 22 freshmen to the Education Learning Community located in Innovation House.

The ELC was created in 2014 to provide first-year education majors a residential learning community that supports academic, social and educational development. Through the ELC, students have the opportunity to live with other pre-education majors, connect with Watson faculty and staff, attend seminars and participate in education field experiences prior to being admitted into the Watson College of Education.

Sixty-three UNCW students have participated in the ELC during their first year on campus, and many have volunteered to mentor incoming freshmen the following year.

A welcome breakfast for new ELC students and their mentors was held Aug. 15 at the Watson College. The ELCs also joined Watson College faculty, staff and students at WCE’s solar eclipse viewing event on Aug. 21 and participated in a kayaking outing on Sept. 23.

LeAnne Smith, director of WCE’s Office of Student Advising and Integrated Leadership coordinates the ELC program. WCE graduate student and SAIL graduate assistant La’Mon Johnson and sophomore Jules Larem coordinate the ELC’s mentor program.
