Dear Seahawk Community:
Unfortunately, a campus shooting incident unfolded Sunday (April 27) at a sister institution, Elizabeth City State University. Tragically, one person who was not a student was pronounced deceased. Other individuals, including ECSU students, were injured in the situation, which remains under investigation.
On behalf of UNCW, I extend our university’s sympathy and support to the ECSU community during this tragic event. We have been in contact with staff at ECSU and have offered our assistance as they work on recovery from this difficult situation.
SeahawkStrong is #ECSUStrong.
Grief Support
If you are experiencing distress as a result of this situation, please remember that grief support is available to students through the University Counseling Center (910.962.3746) and for faculty and staff through the Employee Assistance Program.
Active Attacker Preparedness at UNCW
It is my deepest hope that UNCW never experiences a situation like the incident in Elizabeth City, but we also know we must be prepared to respond quickly if a threat occurs. The UNCW Police Department works closely with campus and community partners to support the safety of our students, faculty and staff in the event of an active attacker on our campus. Please take a few moments to review important safety resources, including online training, available from UNCW Police.
Sincerely yours,
Aswani K. Volety
Chancellor
