Course Description

GLS 592: The Craft of Creative Writing

Instructor: Ashley Hudson

In this course, students will study the craft elements of five sub-genres of creative writing:

  • literary journalism,
  • the personal essay,
  • the lyric essay,
  • poetry,
  • and the short story.

Students will read a selection of successful examples of writing, craft essays and critical texts, and listen to successful writers read from and discuss their work as we progress through the genres listed above. Students will submit an original piece of writing for each unit, which they will then workshop with a group of their peers. The semester will culminate in a final portfolio consisting of the revision of one essay or story completed in the course and an accompanying reflection essay that will demonstrate proficiency in discussing the craft and style choices applied in the revision, citing critical and craft texts studied in the course. All of this will be accomplished using the various multimedia and communication tools available in Blackboard.
