Endowments are an investment in our future and one of the most effective ways to assist students attending the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Donors can establish an endowment to fund a scholarship which is a deciding factor for many students when they select a college or university they want to attend. Endowed scholarships require a minimum gift of $25,000 or that amount pledged over a specified time frame.
The endowment is part of the university's general endowment for investment purposes with an annual payout percentage established by the UNCW Board of Trustees. The balance of the scholarship's earnings is reinvested with the principal to allow for growth and inflation.
Our office is responsible for the fiscal management of these funds to make sure they are correctly classified, creating and maintaining unitized pools for spendable income funds and to record donor-imposed restrictions on spendable income. We prepare and provide various reports on the Endowments to senior administration and the university community.
