Global Focus | HAITI
Fall 2012
“Beyond the mountains, more mountains" (Haitian proverb)
Global Focus: HAITI is a campuswide exploration of the rich culture and compelling history of our international neighbors to the south. Culminating in a weeklong residency with one of Haiti's premiere dance companies, Compagnie de Danse Jean-René Delsoin, the initiative will feature a line-up of performances, films, lectures and presentations for the campus and community.
The initiative kicks off with a performance by Haitian-American violinist, composer, and educator Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), and continues with a series of events featuring artists and educators of local and national renown, including Edwidge Danticat, acclaimed Haitian-American author of Breath, Eyes, Memory, which gained national attention when chosen as an Opera Book Club selection in 1998. A range of events will provide audiences an opportunity to explore various themes of Haitian past, present and future, such as:
- The role of the arts in present day Haiti
- The immigration of Haitians to the US
- The cultural influence of Haitian Americans
- Traditions of the Voudou religion
- Haiti & the slave revolution
- Popular music of Haiti
- Haitian/Caribbean cuisine
Schedule - Global Focus: HAITI
Events for Global Focus: Haiti will be added and updated as they are confirmed.
