UNCW Opera Outreach Project
Monday, April 23 & Tuesday, April 24, 2012
9:15 & 11:15 am, Kenan Auditorium
Free School Performance for Grades K-1
Opera is a wonderful form of storytelling, ideal for young children, which blends singing, pantomime, costumes, and scenery. Cinderella, based on the opera by French composer Jules Massenet, will be the entry point into the student study of storytelling through opera. Whimsical music, lively characters, and dynamic costumes will engage Kindergarten and first grade students in the familiar fairy tale of a poor young woman who finds her Prince Charming, with the help of a little magic!
The UNCW Opera Outreach Project presents a special school performance of the beloved fairy tale, Cinderella. This reduced version incorporates the original music of Massenet, with an updated English translation specifically tailored to young audience. The total performance time is approximately 40 minutes.
The Performance Guide (pdf) can be used in conjunction with the live performance of Cinderella presented by UNCW Opera Outreach Project. The guide outlines performance history, characters, synopsis (plot/setting), composer/librettist/author biography, opera definition, the genre of fairy tales, compare and contrast (opera vs. original source), and concert etiquette.
