Shane Fernando, UNCW Director of Campus Life Arts and Programs, has been elected president of the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts Board of Trustees. Fernando was initially appointed as a trustee by the Wilmington City Council in 2009.

Tony Rivenbark, executive director of Thalian Hall, states, “Shane has been an invaluable addition to the Board of Trustees and a tireless promoter of the importance of Thalian Hall to our community.  His love of Thalian Hall is unbound and has been a part of his life since he was a teenager. He has been an active and hands-on participant in so many aspects.”

A 2000 graduate of the UNCW Department of Communication Studies, Fernando also earned a master's degree in public administration in 2008. He currently oversees UNCW Presents, is Chief Curator of the Ann Flack Boseman Gallery and is an adjunct faculty member in communication studies. In addition, he is a public arts commentator for WHQR Public Radio and a member of the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

He was also recently appointed to the executive committee of the North Carolina Presenters Consortium, and was selected by the N.C. Arts Council as a performing arts juror for this year's arts presenters regional conference, Arts Market in Durham.

Fernando says of his new appointment, "It's truly an honor to serve our vibrant regional arts community in this role. Thalian Hall has been a community center, arts hub and architectural treasure for 155 years. I am humbled to have a hand in continuing her tradition."
