Cultural Arts Gallery Exhibit Examines the Art and Study of the Book

Codicology: The Art & Study of the Book will be on view at the Art Gallery in the UNCW Cultural Arts Building from Feb. 28 – April 5. The exhibition will be accompanied by a juror lecture from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 in room 2033 of the Cultural Arts Building immediately followed by an opening reception from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Both the lecture and reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Monday – Friday.
Codicology means “the study of the book as physical objects” or “archaeology of the book.” This international exhibition, juried by Asheville book sculptor Daniel Essig, features artwork which studies books through a variety of artistic media: sculpture, photography, painting, drawing and collage. Featured artists include Michael Aurbach, Aileen Bassis, Ruth Scott Blackson, Micah Bloom, Roger Boulay, Shelly F. Bradon, Betty Brown, Jordan Buschur, Elliot Coatney, Claire Girodie, Karen Hardy, Nancy Hart, Ellen Knudson, Rachel Mauser, Sarah Nesbitt, Katherine Rausch, Stephen Simmerman, Cat Snapp and Sally Schluter Tardella. Awards for first, second and third place will be announced at the opening reception.
Essig is a studio artist who earned his degree from the University of South Illinois at Carbondale. He has taught book art workshops at Penland School of Crafts, Anderson Ranch, Iowa City Center for Books, Columbia College, Iowa City Center for Books, Columbia College and Oregon College of Art and Craft. Art Gallery in the Cultural Arts Building is located on the ground floor near the building’s main entrance on the corner of Randall Parkway and Reynolds Drive on the UNCW campus. To access either from South College Road or Racine Drive, take a left as you enter the campus area onto Randall Drive. There is visitor parking directly in front of the Box Office entrance to the building.
