Wednesday, January 6th

  • Open Recreation: Basketball from 12:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. Welcome Back! The Student Rec Center (SRC) is the place to be early in the semester! Come and join an open recreation basketball game to see old friends and meet new ones. We can't wait to see you there! Sponsored by Campus Recreation.
  • First Year Spring Admit Social from 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. Meet your fellow first-year Seahawks who are taking flight in the spring semester. Resident Assistants in the first-year areas will host a social with games and refreshments. Meet in your residence hall lobby at 7:00p.m. Sponsored by Housing and Residence Life.

Thursday, January 7th

  • Open Recreation: Volleyball from 12:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. No need to know the game, come and enjoy time with friends learning or just having fun. All skill levels are welcome at the Student Rec Center (SRC)! Sponsored by Campus Recreation.
  • Trivia Night from 6:00p.m. - 7:00p.m. Join fellow Seahawks for a trivia night unlike any other. Bring your own team or join one when you get there. Show off your knowledge and win fabulous prizes. Located in Hawk's Nest, Fisher University Union. Sponsored by UNCWeekends. Friday, January 8th

  • Open Recreation: Wallyball from 12:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. Come out and learn a new game. Wallyball is similar to Volleyball, but it's played in the Racquetball Courts. Ask any of the Campus Rec Staff for assistance setting up or learning the rules! Located at the SRC. Sponsored by Campus Recreation.
  • Introduction to the Red Cross from 12:00p.m. 12:30p.m. Get your commitment to service in the Wilmington community started before classes begin. This is a Red Cross presentation & orientation on the history of the Red Cross and its 5 core services. The presentation includes information on how to become a volunteer and the various opportunities community members have to become engaged with the Red Cross. Be prepared before disaster hits! This session will be held in the Sunset Beach room located on the first floor of the Fisher Student Center. Sponsored by the Red Cross of Wilmington and the registered student organization, the American Red Cross Club.
  • Shelter Fundamentals Workshop from 12:30p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Introduction to the Red Cross is a one hour presentation/orientation on the history of the Red Cross and its 5 core services. The presentation includes information on how to become a volunteer and the various opportunities community members have to become engaged with the Red Cross. Shelter Fundamentals is a two hour course designed to teach volunteers and community partners how to open, run and close a Red Cross shelter in disaster times. This session will be held in the Sunset Beach room located on the first floor of the Fisher Student Center. Sponsored by the Red Cross of Wilmington and the registered student organization, the American Red Cross Club.
  • Movie: Aristocats from 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. In the heart of Paris, a kind and eccentric millionairess wills her entire estate to Duchess, her high-society cat, and her three little kittens. Laughs and adventure ensue as the greedy, bumbling butler pulls off the ultimate catnap caper. Now it's up to the rough-and-tumble alley cat, Thomas O'Malley, and his band of swingin' jazz cats to save the day.   • Shopping at Mayfaire from 1:00p.m. - 3:00p.m. Catch the trolley from campus to the Mayfaire Shopping Center at 1:00 p.m. from the Teal Terminal located outside of Hawk's Nest in the Fisher University Union. Spend a few hours shopping and learning about the Wilmington community. Check out Mayfaire's stores here. Sponsored by Auxiliary Services.
  • Game Night from 5:00p.m. - 8:00p.m. Head down to Sharky's to check out all of your gaming wants and needs for free! Experience gaming with the Xbox 360 and Wii in the large-screen electronic gaming lounge while selecting from a library of nearly 60 games. Show off your fancy footwork in a game of Dance Dance Revolution. Bring a friend or meet new ones for a few rounds of table tennis, air hockey, billiards or board games! Buy your semester membership at this event and get $5 off the normal rate.   • Official Transfer & Non-Traditional student welcome event from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Bring a t-shirt from your former school and exchange it for a UNCW shirt! Meet other transfer and non-traditional students and enjoy FREE PIZZA, games, raffles, and learn about on-campus resources. This event will be held in Seahawk Crossing: Building 2, located next to Dunkin' Donuts. The parking desk will be open for students this day.   • Military-Affiliated Students Open House from 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. The PERCH and the Military Resource Lounge would like to welcome our new and returning military-affiliated students.   • Fellowship of Christian Athletes Gathering from 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Get to know athletes and students around God's word. The registered student organization, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at UNCW is likely going to be similar to your high school experience, but at a more mature level. FCA meets to get to know God and one another and to make lasting friends. Anyone is welcome! This event is located in the Topsail Island Room (2019) on the second floor of the Fisher Student Center.

  • Defining Leadership from 2:00p.m. - 3:00p.m. The definition of Leadership has been, and will continue to be, ever-changing - especially at the college level. This workshop is designed for you to explore different types of leadership and develop your own personal definition. The workshop meets requirements for the Leadership Development Program and is a great way to kick start your semester at UNCW! This event is located in the Wrightsville Beach room located on the second floor of the Fisher Student Union and sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement.
  • LeaderShape® Interest Meeting from 3:00pm – 4:00pm. The LeaderShape® InstituteTM challenges participants to lead with integrity while working towards a vision grounded in their deepest values. Participants explore what they want to do, AND who they want to be. Expect Respect: Relationship Check uses real scenarios to help participants understand the dynamics of healthy and unhealthy relationships. We will explore the Power and Control Wheel and the Cycle of Violence to understand the barriers to leaving bad relationships. We will also discuss tangible ways to help a friend who is experiencing signs of an unhealthy relationship. This event will be located in Masonboro Island Room, located on the second floor of the Fisher Student Center across from the Bookstore.   • Seahawk Strength from 5:30p.m. - 6:30p.m. Students are faced with various challenges and opportunities to thrive at UNCW. This program teaches resiliency skills and encourages insight into personal difficulties that may hinder growth in order to help students thrive following difficult events. This event will be in room 114 in the Student Recreation Center (SRC). Sponsored by Counseling Center and Health Promotion.
  • Surfrider Meet and Greet from 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. Come out to the semesters first UNCW Surfrider Foundation meeting and find out what you can do to help protect and enjoy our oceans, beaches, and waves. You'll meet inspiring people and learn just how important our initiative is now that you live near the beach! This meet and greet will be in Luetze Hall 134. Thursday, January 21st

  • Dive Into Your Leadership Experience! from 5:00p.m - 6:00p.m. Come learn about the Leadership Development Program, the only leadership program on campus designed by YOU. We'll describe the program and how to get involved, as well as give some insight into the program sponsor: the Office of Student Leadership & Engagement. This is THE event to kick start your leadership journey at UNCW! This program will take place in the Azalea Coast room located on the second floor of the Fisher University Union.
  • More than a Mean Girl from 5:30p.m. - 6:00p.m. Want to be a better friend? Tired of women gossiping about other women? Struggling to support your friend who is in a relationship you don't approve of? Join us for pizza and a discussion about the negative stereotypes surrounding women and the impact it can have on their relationships. This workshop is inspired by Roxane Gay's essay 'How to Be Friends with Another Woman,' found in her New York Times Best Seller, Bad Feminist. Roxane Gay will give a lecture on campus on Monday, February 2, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the Burney Center. This event will be held in the Wrightsville Beach room, located on the second floor of the Fisher Student Center and sponsored by a registered student organization, the National Panhellenic Council.

  • Movie: The Martian (Two Showings) from 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. & 10:00p.m. -12:00a.m. During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. $2 w/UNCW Student ID $4 Non-Students. Tickets will be available in Sharky's Box Office & Game Room on the first floor of the Fisher Student Center next to Lumina Theater and may be purchased in the days before the show. Saturday, January 23rd

  • Diaper Drive from 10:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. Start off your semester by getting involved in one of UNCW's service organizations! Make A Change is a group of volunteers at UNCW that work to promote awareness of diaper need and collect diapers to donate to mothers who cannot afford them here in Wilmington. It's a great way to get connected with other volunteers at UNCW, nonprofits that support women and children, and organizations across the community. We will be volunteering at the Lowe's Food 805 Pine Grove Dr. Wilmington NC, 28403. We will be asking customers to purchase diapers to donate while they're inside shopping.   • Reel Teal Film Festival from 7:00p.m. 11:00p.m. Reel Teal Film Festival is a student-organized film festival presented by members of the Flicker Film Society. Join us in Lumina Theater for a free showing of a variety of international short films. There is no fee to enter and all are welcome to attend. There will be a brief intermission between the showing blocks where viewers and filmmakers can mingle. This event will be held in Lumina Theater located on the first floor of the Fisher Student Center.

Monday, January 25th

  • The Cool Girl from 3:00p.m. - 4:00p.m. The 'Cool Girl' is just one societal construct created for women that requires women to suppress needs and 'go with the flow' (Gay, 2014). In addition, women are subtly or overtly asked to adapt to the needs of others with a smile on their face. This program will assist female students in gaining insight into the impact of this construct. The program is discussion based using video clips and exerts from essays written by Roxanne Gay.   • Meet the Greeks from 7:00p.m. - 8:00p.m. Are you interested in learning more about fraternities and sororities at UNCW? Come meet the members of UNCW’s social fraternities and sororities. These values-based organizations work to promote good scholarship, leadership, brotherhood/sisterhood, and service to the community. These groups make up over 12% of our current undergraduate population with a great way to be involved in a valued campus experience. This is event will take place in the Student Rec Center Mac gym and is sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement.

Wednesday, January 27th

  • 50 Shades of Bad Feminism Family Feud from 6:30p.m. - 7:30p.m. What do 50 Shades of Gray, the Little Mermaid and Nerf Guns all have in common? Come and find out while having loads of fun and laughs at CARE's Family Feud knock-off! Using surveys of UNCW's student body as guidance, we will explore some of the differences between male and female perspectives in relationships and examine how differently men and women are socialized, thanks to the media and our society. All of the fun will be in Roxane Gay-style, in anticipation of her upcoming campus visit. Be sure to come and join the fun in the Graham Hewlett Hall, Great Room.
