The Upperman Center: Thirty-three years after the first black students enrolled at what was then Wilmington College, UNCW opened the Upperman African American Cultural Center. Since 1995, Seahawks have had a spot in the student union to catch documentaries, hear lectures and check out exhibits celebrating black culture.

New Hanover County trying food composter
New Hanover County is starting a pilot program using a huge food composting system that officials hope will ultimately mean no more food ending up in the landfill. For the next year, the pilot program will take food thrown away by the University of North Carolina Wilmington and run it through the composter.
