First-Year Orientation Overview

First-year orientation is designed for students who recently graduated from high school or took a gap year and will begin their 4-year university experience at UNCW. All first-year students will complete a hybrid orientation experience. To learn about the guest orientation, visit our Families & Guests webpage.

Below you will find information about the hybrid orientation experience for first-year students.

Pre-Orientation Modules

The first part of orientation will be pre-orientation modules which will provide a solid foundation of information that is important for new students to learn about UNCW. Below outlines the three sets of modules that must be completed before the synchronous orientation program in June. The deadline to complete these modules is June 9.

If students do not complete the pre-orientation modules by June 9, a hold will be placed on their account preventing course registration. The hold will be removed once all the pre-orientation modules have been completed.

UNCW Resource modules

The UNCW Resource modules contain information about campus resources, academic requirements, behavioral expectations, campus policies, and engagement opportunities. Students can access the UNCW online modules through VisualZen, the orientation registration system, after the student orientation fee is paid. The UNCW modules will take approximately 5-6 hours to complete. You can complete these modules immediately after signing up for orientation.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion modules

The diversity, equity and inclusion modules are an interactive and engaging way for students to learn more about identity, campus diversity and inclusion policies, and recognize the impact of individual actions on a community. Students will receive an email within 1-2 business days after they register for orientation with the link to access the modules. If students do not receive the link, they can log into the system with UNCW username and password, by clicking here. The interactive modules can be completed on a computer or mobile device and will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete.

U Got This! Violence Prevention modules

U Got This! is an interactive, video-based program that engages students in conversations around issues of sexual violence, dating violence, stalking and harassment. After students register for their orientation in the VisualZen orientation registration system, they will receive access via email to the Catharsis Online Violence Prevention modules within 2 weeks of receiving their orientation confirmation email. The interactive modules can be completed on a computer or mobile device and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Early Registration Opportunity

UNCW offers first-year students the opportunity to register for classes before the synchronous orientation programs in June. Students who meet the eligibility requirements will be able to meet with an advisor and register for courses between May 24 – June 3.

To participate in early course registration, students must register for orientation by May 9 and complete all the pre-orientation modules by May 18. We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity.

Synchronous Virtual Orientation, Advising & Course Registration

All first-year students will participate in a virtual synchronous orientation program in June. During the June virtual orientation program, students will meet their Orientation Leader, learn more about campus resources, connect with other first-year students, meet with an advisor and register for courses (if they have completed the UNCW online modules, the U Got This! Violence Prevention modules, and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion modules).

Students will select their orientation date in the orientation registration system and receive an email with the zoom links and more information one week before their orientation date. Students can select one of the following dates: June 14, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, or 29.

In-person Orientation on August 15

Join the orientation leaders for a fun day meeting other new students, touring campus, and learning more about your new community. There will be food, music, games for students to participate in and opportunities to take care of final business before classes begin.
