Tech Talk Newsletter Banner

Volume 1, Issue 1November 2017, First Edition

Greetings from the CIO

Sharyne MillerWelcome to the first edition of our Tech Talk Newsletter. We are excited to bring you timely updates on technology happenings across campus. Information Technology Services has been hard at work updating classrooms, improving wireless access and strengthening our information security posture. We also have been collaborating with others across campus to facilitate the creation of a long-term IT strategic plan. To support the growing demand for online content by our campus population, we have increased the bandwidth capacity of our university’s connection to the Internet. Many of our initiatives are listed below with details and timeframes included. We have some new and exciting collaboration initiatives underway in Randall Library and the Fisher Student Union where faculty and students will get hands-on experience with new technologies in creative and collaborative spaces.

October was information security awareness month. Below are some tips for remaining vigilant about protecting your personal information on your mobile devices including laptops, tablets, smartphones and wearables:

  • Protect your device. Add a passcode to your cell phone, tablet or laptop now!
  • Use strong passwords or passphrases. This is especially important for online banking and other important accounts. Don’t use the same password for your banking as you do for email and social media.
  • Enable multifactor authentication.  Help secure your accounts by requiring hardware or biometrics in addition to your password.
  • Check your social media settings. Review your social media security and privacy settings frequently. Enable two-step verification whenever possible.
  • Educate yourself. Stay informed about the latest technology trends and security issues such as malware and phishing.

All of our efforts are in service of and support for our institution and the success of our students. If you have a technology need or concern, please reach out to us as early as possible as ITS is committed to being your trusted strategic technology partner.

Thank you,
Sharyne Miller
