We are both happy and melancholy to announce that John Finn, after nearly 20 years of dedicated service to UNCW, is setting his sights on a well-deserved retirement!

After retiring from active duty in the Marine Corps, he began working at UNCW in December 2001 as Financial Compliance Officer in the presently named Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance (SPARC) office, a role that he has continued with to this day. In addition to his regular duties, he also served as Acting Assistant Director of SPARC for eight months in 2019-20.

The entire UNCW research enterprise has benefitted from John’s strong commitment to research compliance and passion towards excellence. Amongst his numerous duties, he has for years spearheaded the federally mandated Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey, UNC System required reporting elements on research at UNCW, subaward negotiations and monitoring with external entities, and research effort reporting activities within the various colleges and departments.

His expertise in federal and North Carolina state regulations – especially Uniform Guidance and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FARs/DFARs) – is unparalleled, playing a critically important role in the growth and success of UNCW’s rise to an R2 high research activity institution.
