The Associate Provost for Research is the chief research officer with specific responsibilities to assist the university leadership (provost and academic deans) in developing, coordinating, and maintaining and growing research activities. This position also has responsibilities for managing the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) and the Campus for Research, Entrepreneurship, Service and Teaching (CREST) UNCW's Millennial Campus.

Signature authority for sponsored programs; stay abreast of new regulations;  promote compliance; establish and implement guidelines, policies and procedures for management of research funding; educate impacted individuals; initiate sponsored program innovations to enhance research initiatives; oversee contract and grant negotiations, grant review, material transfer, data use, and confidentiality agreement review and negotiation;  work with institution leadership to obtain support for administrative actions that impact sponsored projects; interact with deans and center directors to assess research transactional needs and implement appropriate program enhancements; develop business processes and rules to coordinate sponsored project related activities with UNCW operations; analyze reports of research funding; mediate concerns related to sponsored programs; liaison between funding agencies and UNCW;  represent the interests of faculty, staff and the VPR in defining, developing, and implementing institutional business operations; collaborate with individuals and leadership to address client service, strategic planning, work process review and enhancement and education needs, human resources, budget and finance, and infrastructure for SPARC and UNCW; Ensure maintenance of data, prepare institutional reports and provide research-related metrics as requested; summer salary and course buy-out issues; budget modifications

Coordinates the daily activities of certain compliance programs handled by the research integrity unit. Organizes and conducts training for the Responsible Conduct of Research training program, tracks conflict of interest reporting, and contacts the campus community when they travel outside the United States to notify them of export control implications.

Duties include conducting initial reviews on all human subject research application submissions, corresponding with researchers for clarifications on research application, verifying that required training is in place, responding to questions regarding submission procedures and regulatory requirements, providing guidance and suggestions on consent forms and recruitment materials to meet ethical standards, organizing full board meetings, preparing meeting materials, recording meeting minutes, and creating reports.

This position is a member of the Office of Corporate and Foundation Engagement in University Advancement, working in partnership with SPARC and units across campus to secure funding from corporations and private foundations.

Provide support to college/school and faculty for sponsored programs. Manage budgets for all grants received by units which he is assigned. Prepares all new award, NCX and supplemental paperwork. Delegates approval on check requests, travel actions, budgets, HR actions, equipment approvals, PO's, Ushop, tuition remission actions and other related actions. Create and authorize salary reallocations as needed. Create and update salary rec spreadsheets. Make decisions as to allowability, need for extensions, budget modifications, A/R follow-up and general grants management activities. Provides reports to PI's and Sponsors as needed. Liaison between Sponsor and PI. Provide guidance in budget development during proposal phase.
