The UNCW Honors College welcomes Shawn Binghman as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Honors College

Shawn Bingham, UNCW’s new associate dean of undergraduate studies and director of Honors College, is used to working places that have a real “family feel.” In his previous role at the University of South Florida, Bingham and his whole family lived directly on campus for five years. He is getting a strong, family-friendly vibe at UNCW as well.

“The sense of community we have experienced here has far exceeded our expectations,” he said. “On the day we unloaded our moving van, we had a student and faculty member lending a hand!”

Bingham came to UNCW in July after most recently serving as assistant dean of the USF Honors College. He was also an associate professor of sociology, a role he has been known to have some fun with.

“I co-authored a book on stand-up comedy as social activism,” Bingham said. “It’s hard to keep a straight face when you are interviewing comedians!”

Bingham holds a Ph.D. in sociology from American University, an M.Ed. in special education from the University of Maryland at College Park and a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL.

Bingham, who is married with two daughters, credits his wife, Angela, with at least some of his academic and occupational success. “I almost dropped out of graduate school to make banjos and guitars, but my wife (thankfully) talked me out of it,” he said. “I had very little talent for it.”
