Program Description
Immerse yourself in an environment that combines staple engineering principles of design, testing, and analysis while accommodating for unique marine environments. Students will interact with all aspects of ocean engineering, including coastal structures, port and harbor development, oceanic exploration, and alternative energy from the sea. Gain knowledge on the local projects in the coastal community of Wilmington and its respective barrier islands to analyze local examples of these topics.
Prerequisites
Must have completed 6th grade and turn 12 by the start of the program.
Highlights
- Investigate oceanographic conditions using scientific tools on a half day research cruise.
- Monitor coastal change using drones and other tried and true methods of land profiling.
- Conduct wave tank experiments in the lab and collect real-life wave data while boogie boarding.
- Engineer a device to harness ocean energy.
- Get an introduction of Arduino coding for sensors and robotics.
- Investigate how a port’s physical design footprint contributes to the efficacy of its operations.
