Michael L. Turner

Associate Professor

Dr. Mike Turner is Associate Professor of Arabic with a joint appointment in the Department of World Languages and Cultures and the Department of International Studies. An Arabic dialectologist with a specialization in the spoken varieties of North Africa and their historical development, he coordinates the Arabic program at UNCW, offering coursework from the beginning to the advanced level, and advises the Middle East & Islamic Studies minor. He also regularly offers coursework on international issues both broadly and with a special focus on the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahara.

MA/PhD in Middle Eastern Languages & Cultures, University of Texas at Austin.
BA in International Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Research Interests

Arabic dialectology, Maghrebi Arabic, Middle Arabic, historical linguistics, language contact, dialect instruction in the formal classroom.
