Matt Mylott ’07, ’18M

Nov. 6, 2017

Although Matt Mylott ’07, ’18M is a native Californian, he’s very much at home on the East Coast. All it takes is a stroll down Chancellor’s Walk to remind him of what he loves most about life here.

“The beautiful coastal campus and the incredible reputation the university has nationally all contribute to what I love about UNCW. But at the end of the day, it’s the people that I share a classroom with or sit next to in a meeting that makes being a part of UNCW incredible to me.”

Mylott, who earned a bachelor’s in political science from UNCW in 2007, joined the staff of the Swain Center this past spring and is set to earn his M.B.A. in 2018.

During the 10 years he was away from campus, he served in the United States Marine Corps in the Special Operations community and worked as a SWAT operator in California. Through these various roles, he has amassed skills in leadership, crisis negotiation, team building, strategic partnerships and public speaking. He’s also pretty good at jumping out of planes. “I have been a free fly skydiver for a few years, but since the closest drop-zone is in Southport, I don’t jump as often as I’d like,” he said. Mylott is also passionate about freediving, spearfishing and attending church with his family.

Mylott said he has UNCW to thank for his education, personal and professional connections and being a part of the Swain team. “We have a rad group of staffers, student workers and interns that all bring unique minds and diverse experiences to the team. I’m grateful to be a part of it.”
