In a small office in the Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory in UNCW’s Watson College of Education, Susan Finley crafts stories promoting high-quality programs, outstanding faculty and extensive opportunities for hands-on learning for future educators.

Finley, a public information specialist for Watson College, hopes these stories will inspire others to seek a career in education. A former managing director and CEO of a marketing company in New York City, Finley joined UNCW in July 2013. Her background includes work as a bank product manager in Houston, TX, and a senior project manager at a marketing agency in New York City.

“I found UNCW offered an opportunity to apply knowledge and experience in marketing to a completely new industry,” she said.

Finley writes the monthly “Watson Chronicle” online newsletter and promotes programs, events and efforts of Watson faculty, staff and students. She also creates marketing campaigns, such as the “It Begins with Teachers” initiative that promotes the teaching profession and the college by sharing stories of inspirational teachers.

“I was most impressed by UNCW’s faculty and staff’s dedication and their focus on student success; the strength of Watson College of Education’s school and community partnerships; and the extensive field experience, internship, community engagement and outreach opportunities these partnerships provide,” she said. “There are so many ways for students to gain valuable experience before beginning a career!”
