Watson Celebrates Kimberly Stokes’ Long Career in Education

WCE faculty and staff paid tribute to Kimberly Stokes at the college-wide meeting on November 16. Ms. Kim has been a special education teacher for 30 years, and coordinator of NHCS’ Transition Program for Young Adults at the Watson College site for the past 25 years. In Memoriam: Dr. Maurice Martinez

The Watson College was deeply saddened to learn that Maurice Martinez passed away on September 12. Dr. Martinez was a professor at the Watson College for 20 years prior to his retirement as professor emeritus in 2014, and remained a close friend of the College. He was a valued colleague, a fighter for social justice, a renaissance man, poet, educator, musician, writer, documentarian, husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed. more...

In Memoriam: Catherine Heglar

The Watson College is deeply sorry to share the news that Catherine Heglar, who served as an Ed Lab instructor and coach at UNCW for more than 10 years following a 30-year teaching career, passed away in August. WCE Bids Farewell to Vance Durrington, Dianne Evans and McKenzie Teter

In September, the Watson College said goodbye to Vance Durrington, Dianne Evans and McKenzie Teter. Dr. Durrington has been an Associate Professor in WCE’s Department of ITFSE since 2007, Ms. Evans has served as Executive Assistant to four WCE Associate Deans over the past 15 years, and Ms. Teter has served as an Administrative Associate in the Office of APS. Malaysia Thames Receives first Nora Claire Knight Waves of Light Award

In 2020, Jenn Hatch Knight and her husband Matthew established an award in memory their daughter Nora Claire. The award, created to bring light to the pain of infant loss, enables a D.C. Virgo student to attend a MarineQuest camp each year. This year, Malaysia Thames received the first Nora Claire Knight Waves of Light Award. Malaysia attended MarineQuest’s Ocean Lab program in July. more...
