Sabrina Hill-Black Receives WILMA Women to Watch Award in Education

Tuesday, November 10, 2020

Sabrina Hill-Black, principal of D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy, has received the 2020 WILMA Women to Watch Award in Education. The annual awards honor achievements in the areas of business, rising star, health care, arts, nonprofit/volunteer, public service and education. This year, 35 finalists were recognized, and WILMA Magazine announced the winners in each category in a story on October 27: The 2020 Women to Watch Award Winners.

“Anyone who has spent even a short amount of time interacting with Sabrina walks away impressed,” said Watson College Dean Van Dempsey. “Whether it is with DC Virgo children, school staff, university colleagues, or people in the community, people can see the passion, leadership, and sense of commitment she brings to her work as an educator. She is a force and represents the very best of the education profession and our community.”

Hill-Black graduated from New Hanover High School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English/Language Arts Teacher Education from North Carolina Central University and a master’s in Educational Leadership and Administration from Gardner-Webb University. She began her career as a teacher at Roland-Grise Middle School, then taught for 6 years at Williston Middle School where she was named New Hanover County Schools’ 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year.

Hill-Black joined the D.C. Virgo family in 2013. She was a teacher, instructional coach and assistant principal before assuming her current role of principal in 2016. In 2018, she oversaw the school’s transition to a K-8 school, opened in partnership with UNCW. D.C. Virgo currently serves more than 200 students in downtown Wilmington.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition,” Hill-Black said. “I believe our greatest mission is to provide access and opportunity for all students to have solid educational experiences and unique opportunities that will afford them positive collaborative experiences through community and partnerships beyond the classroom.”

UNCW announced Hill-Black’s award in a home page story on October 29: UNCW’s Fidias Reyes, Sabrina Hill-Black Winners of WILMA's 2020 Women to Watch Awards.
