UNCW Alumna Stacey Maurer Named NHCS “Rookie of the Year”

Stacey Pinno Maurer ’12, ’17M has been named New Hanover County Schools’ 2019 “Rookie of the Year.” Maurer earned her bachelor’s degree in communications and worked for two years as a WECT reporter before enrolling in WCE’s Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education. She currently teaches fifth grade at Wrightsboro Elementary School.

The award was presented at the Downtown Rotary Club’s annual ROY ceremony on February 19.

New Hanover County Schools, in partnership with the Downtown Rotary Club, created the Rookie of the Year Award in 2017 to honor outstanding NHCS professionals in their second and third years of teaching. Other finalists included two other UNCW alumni:

  • Alisha Little ‘17, Ogden Elementary School
  • Stephen O’Neil, Ashley High School
  • Alex Schaivone ’16M, New Hanover High School
  • Jennifer Yates, Johnson Pre-K Center

Maurer received a plaque and a $1,000 gift card, presented by the Downtown Rotary Club. The other four finalists received $500.
