MarineQuest Hosts 2019 Blue Heron Bowl

Monday, April 01, 2019

MarineQuest was host to the Southeast round of the 2019 National Ocean Sciences Bowl, a science competition known as the Blue Heron Bowl. The event was held at the Watson College on February 2.

Twelve high school teams from across the state (and Tennessee) joined the MarineQuest team at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher for a very special welcoming banquet. There, students had the opportunity to learn about innovative technology produced by the Morrison lab at UNCW. Dr. Morrison and his Ph.D. wife, Sarah, have developed a new type of ocean observing satellite, and the information they shared related directly to the NOSB theme of "Ocean Observing".

Saturday featured round robin competitions to test the students’ marine science knowledge.

“It is so impressive what these students really know,” said Erin Moran, the event’s lead coordinator and director of UNCW’s Marine Quest. “This year, Raleigh Charter and NC School of Science and Math were tied to the very end. With an audience on the edge of their seats, Raleigh Charter defeated the reigning champion team by just several points! Surely one of the most exciting endings to a competition we have ever seen.”

Raleigh Charter High School continued to impress at the National event in Washington D.C. where they tied Newport High School for 3rd place during the Science Expert Briefing portion of competition.
