WCE Hosts Fall Partnership Teacher Celebration

Monday, January 01, 2018

During the fall semester 90 Watson College students successfully completed internships in area schools. On Dec. 5, the Watson College hosted a dinner to celebrate the students’ achievements and honor the dedication of WCE’s hosting partnership teachers.

Watson College dean Van Dempsey and associate dean Donyell Roseboro joined Somer Lewis and Cindy Wiseman in expressing appreciation to WCE’s partners in the schools. Lewis is director of WCE’s Professional Development System (PDS) office and Wiseman is director of Professional Experiences at the college.

WCE associate professor Lisa Buchanan and fall 2017 intern Andy Harrison were also featured speakers.

Timothy Mills, third grade teacher at Pine Valley Elementary School, received the fall 2017 Roy E. Harkin Teacher Recognition Award for excellence as a partnership teacher. His nomination shared his personal attributes of patience, creativity and thoughtfulness when interacting with students, interns and colleagues.

The award was established in 2008 in memory of Dr. Harkin, who served as chair of the Education Department at UNCW from 1976 to 1979 and as dean of the School of Education until 1991.

In addition to internships for 90 Watson College students, site coordinators at WCE partnership schools worked with WCE’s Professional Experiences team to facilitate 2,256 field placements for Watson College pre-service teachers during the fall semester.
