Blue Heron Bowl – Feb. 17

Thursday, January 04, 2018

UNCW will host the Southeast round of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, known as the Blue Heron Bowl. The event will be held at the Watson College of Education on February 17.

The Blue Heron Bowl is a regional marine science competition for high school students who are competing for a chance to travel to the National Ocean Science Bowl competition later in the year. The goal of the competition is to introduce high school students to topics in marine science, prepare them for ocean science-related careers, and help them become environmental stewards. This year's theme is Oceans Shaping Weather.

At the regional event at UNCW, two teams, each composed of four students and one alternate, will square off against each other to answer questions related to marine science. Many of the participants have a marine science or general science teacher who sponsors their training and serves as a coach.

Winners will be invited with all-expenses-paid to compete at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl in Boulder, Colorado in April.

The event is free and open to the public.
