Youth Programs Offers Literacy Live for Young Readers

Wednesday, March 01, 2017

UNCW’s Youth Programs, in partnership with Randall Library, offers Saturday programs for young readers during the fall and spring semesters. The themed Literacy Live events are designed to provide children ages 4-7 with opportunities to develop their reading comprehension skills through dramatic play, interactive learning stations and integrated STEM connections.

During Literacy Live events, carefully selected stories are used to engage children with the theme of the program and accompanying STEM activities are used to reinforce comprehension of the reading material. The children are encouraged to use their imaginations and personal experiences to learn more about STEM concepts presented and create theme-related projects.

The theme of the March 18 event was “Spring Magic!” Spring is the season of new beginnings and growth, and the event provided young children an opportunity to learn, observe and explore the magical changes happening around us as they engaged in STEM based activities and investigated the life cycles and metamorphic changes of fun community companions.

Curriculum Materials Center coordinator and UNCW lecturer Kathryn Batten coordinates the Literacy Live events.
