Faculty Participate in Cucalorus Connect Conference

Thursday, November 03, 2016

WCE associate professor Marsha Carr, technology director Jeff Ertzberger and recently retired faculty member Debbie Powell were panel presenters at the second annual Cucalorus Connect business conference in November. The conference, presented by the UNCW Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and tekMountain, brings leaders from prominent NC industries together to help bridge the gap between technology and creativity.

Carr participated in the Women in Entrepreneurship panel event, held at the Ironclad Brewery on Nov. 9. Carr is a faculty member in WCE’s Department of Educational Leadership. She also serves as an international consultant to business and education on self-mentoring® through her company, EduTell LLC. Lauren Fuhrer, product and marketing director at mimijumi, and Diane Durance, director of UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, also served on the panel, which was moderated by UNCW undergraduate student Sydney Sides.

Ertzberger and Powell participated in a conference panel titled EdTech Developments at UNCW. Ertzberger teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in instructional technology at the Watson College and has designed technology games and game templates used by teachers around the world. Powell is entrepreneur-in-residence at CIE, a role she assumed after retiring from a long career in education in July. She founded the company Uni-SPIRE and created the Universal Writing Continuum, a pre-K to grade 12 solution to help teachers help students improve written communication.

Ron Vetter, associate provost for research and dean of UNCW’s Graduate School, joined Ertzberger and Powell on the EdTech panel.

Carr and Powell are featured in a film on Women in Entrepreneurship created by CIE. View the final version here!

Cucalorus Connect offered more than 40 programs including entrepreneur documentaries, TED talk-style panels and workshops on topics ranging from marine science to healthcare, biotechnology, film industry and financial services. It was offered as part of Wilmington’s Cucalorus Film Festival, now in its 22nd year.

The conference was featured in a UNCW home page story on Nov. 9.
