Dean Volety Shares WCE Photos from Diwali Festival

Tuesday, November 01, 2016

UNCW was host to a Diwali Festival of Lights celebration on Nov. 5.

WCE associate professor Michele Parker joined community members and faculty and students from across campus at the festival, which featured Indian food, a Bollywood performance from Sonalee Bollywood Dance Studio in New York and a free Bollywood dance class. As the celebration drew to a close, attendees, including Parker, were invited on stage for photos.

Parker attended her first Diwali celebration as an undergraduate student at SUNY Stony Brook. In 2013, during a trip to India for leisure with WCE professors Tamara Walser and Eleni Pappamihiel, and former WCE faculty member Florence Martin, she further fell in love with the Indian culture, she said.

“When I saw there was a Diwali celebration at UNCW I jumped at the opportunity to participate and brought a WCE student along,” Parker said. “The Warwick ballroom was full of people and it was a wonderful celebration of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair (the meaning of Diwali).”
