Students Raise Funds for “Step Up for Soldiers”

Friday, April 01, 2016

For more than 20 years, UNCW has offered a leadership studies minor to students in any academic field and it has been a program of the Department of Educational Leadership in the Watson College of Education since 2004. Students learn leadership concepts and develop personal leadership styles in a series of courses offered by LED coordinator Joanne Nottingham. During the final semester, students work to hone their skills by teaming on a leadership project in service to the community.

Since fall 2013, students enrolled in the leadership studies program have been raising money for the local nonprofit Step Up for Soldiers. The students host fundraising events in partnership with local merchants including Capt’n Bill’s Backyard Grill, Trolly Stop Hot Dogs, Mission BBQ, McAlister’s Deli and Fermental. This year, the students also sold a signature limited edition water bottle with the UNCW logo produced by the local company CSI Promotions  at locations across campus and in the community.

Step Up for Soldiers serves all five branches of the military, offering funding to those who need financial assistance as well as home modifications, family support and more.
