180 Partnership Teachers attend Professional Learning Days at WCE

WCE's Professional Development System (PDS) Office hosted two professional learning days titled "Innovative, Committed and Inspired: 175 Years of Public Education in NC" in March.

About 120 early childhood and elementary school teachers attended the first event held on March 20. Richard Olsen, chair of the Department of Communication Studies at UNCW was keynote speaker. His presentation was titled "#Not Just Media: Communication Concepts & Skills K-12 Educators Should Consider." Roger Shew, lecturer in UNCW's Department of Geography and Geology, provided a lunch address titled "Environmental 'Treasures and Issues' in Southeastern North Carolina: Use in Teaching and Application to Standards."

PLD2A second professional learning day was held on March 25 for 60 partnership teachers at the middle grades and secondary level. Olsen was again keynote speaker and North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) president Rodney Ellis was featured lunch speaker.

PDS director Somer Lewis partnered with Watson College faculty and educators from schools, community organizations and across the UNCW campus to provide 27 presentations for the two-day event.

The professional learning days are offered each semester to PDS partnership teachers hosting interns from the Watson College.
