WCE Graduate Student Featured in UNC-GA Story

Beth Peddle, a student in the Watson College of Education M.Ed. Language and Literacy program was the grand prize winner of the inaugural Picture This: UNC Research Photo Contest in May. Peddle’s winning photograph was displayed during Graduate Education Day at the NC General Assembly on May 21, and she was featured in an article on the UNC General Administration homepage in October.

The Picture This amateur photo competition was open to all current graduate students at any UNC campus. Entries were judged on whether the image and accompanying description conveyed knowledge gained through university research to a general public audience in a clear and compelling way and how the research can potentially benefit N.C. citizens.

Peddle’s winning entry was that of a young student involved with Peddle’s research on “keywords,” an organic literacy approach designed to introduce children to reading by teaching them words that are important to their lives.

She has been taking photographs for about two years.

“It’s a great medium for displaying keywords because you can see the child attached to the word,” she said.

Peddle’s research is featured in the UNC GA article titled “Organic Literacy Strengthens Reading, Writing and Relationships.”
